The Fairytale puppet Theatre is proud to announce that it will perform two shows at the Allende Arts Festival on Saturday Sept.24th, along with Leah Salomaa and Bavia Arts - Brazilian Dance & Percussion Artists.

Saturday, September 24th 2011 - Noon to 4pm (puppet show at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.)

Join us for this family centered event and experience the joy of sharing our diverse cultures through music and dance, arts and crafts, puppetry, workshops and even a community soccer game!

Puppet Show in the Park!

The Fairytale Puppet Theatre is presenting Jack and the Beanstalk in Vermont Square Park!

Show time: Friday August 26th at 4:45 pm

(This is not the beginning of the long weekend - that is the week after)

Suggested Family Donation: $20 (or Pay What You Can)

Any funds raised beyond the cost of the show will go towards a PUMP to enhance water play in the playground.

As many of you know, the original plans for this stage of the park renewal contained a water pump for the playground, to be installed along with new play equipment during this year's construction. The water-play pump has been removed from the plans for this year against our recommendations (along with other lesser changes which the Playground Committee approved) in order to bring in lower bids.

Let's get a pump back in the plans - and pay for it as a community!!!

The Frog Prince on the Island - Public Perfomance

Come with the family to celebrate all things Earth on Saturday, April 24th, on Toronto Island.

I will be performing The Frog Prince at the Earth Day Fun Fair at the Waterfront Montessori Children's Centre on Toronto Island.
The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the puppet show will be at 11:30 a.m.

Here are photographs of the some of the puppets I use. Most of them are over twelve years old and have seen a lot of performances.They periodically need a touch up, as I sometimes throw them off of my hands quickly to get the next character on.They have never complained of such treatment.

All of the puppets, (with the exception of the witch pictured above, and the frog) are made out of papier mache and a commercial clay product called DAS.The original witch that I used had a head made entirely of clay, and it was too difficult to hold up for the length of a performance.She would be seen "nodding off", as my finger gave in, halfway through.

I always ask if the Birthday child has a favourite song, knowing that it is possible that I won't know it.I expect to be asked for Yellow Submarine, or Down by the Bay.Sometimes I am floored at what the kids say.Here are some song titles that kids have asked for in the past. Don't forget that most of these kids three to six years of age.They have good taste.

I am always amazed at the variety.Here are just a few of the songs I have been asked to sing:

World Puppetry Day !

Wednesday, March 21st is world puppetry day. Pick up a puppet and talk to it. Make a puppet out of something and ask it how it feels.

The great puppet maker, Kanja Chen, has pictures on his blog of puppets he and school age children made during a workshop.They are fabulous!

Here are amazing, gigantic marionettes performing in Nantes, France.The people watching were completely spellbound. I wish I had seen this.The puppets were created by Le Royal Deluxe.

The theatre is portable and stands six and a half feet high and about four feet square.
The puppeteer is in the middle.
This is an old photo. I look much younger now.

The Fairytale Puppet Theatre has been performing at libraries, daycares, and private functions
since 1993. All the puppets and most of the props, including the portable theatre itself, are hand made.
The emphasis of the performances is on story telling and audience participation.
( Of course sometimes we cannot stop them from participating.)
Pictured below are the Three Little Pigs. Please note that the puppeteer only has two hands.
Although based on the well known fairytales, the shows have unexpected twists and humour for all ages.
None of them contain the violence and cruelty sometimes found in old fairytales. There is enough of that in the real world.

Rude Ramsay and the Roaring Radishes

Key Porter Books approached us to do a show based on Margaret Atwood's book, Rude Ramsay and the Roaring Radishes. We made the puppets to look just like the illustrations by Dusan Petricic

We had a lot of fun creating a rollicking rendition of the story with ridiculously rampant repetition of words that start with "R".

The first performance was at Lorraine Kimsa's Theatre for Young People.We used real radishes of course! Really!
Dennis Lee read some poems and Margaret Atwood read Rude Ramsay. Before the puppet show started Margaret Atwood came backstage and tried the Ramsay puppet on.
She has done a few puppet shows in her time!
